About the YWCA

The YWCA in the Wellington region is over 100 years old.  We run relevant programmes in the region to help develop and educate women, with support from members, volunteers, community trusts and foundations.

YWCA’s history in the Wellington region.

Our vision is to see young women making positive life choices.

We aim to do this by:

  • Providing training and mentoring so young women acquire the skill and confidence to reach their potential;
  • Providing role models by celebrating success;
  • Providing opportunities for relationship building, networking, and connections between all women of all ages;
  • Raising community awareness of issues that our young women face and advocating on their behalf;
  • Collaborating with other service providers towards common goals
  • Sustaining our organisation and our activities through fundraising, promoting the YWCA and building our membership.

We are guided by:

  • relevance to issues as our young women see them
  • our partnership through Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • our Christian heritage
  • our diverse society within our multi-cultural and multi-faith nation
  • our fellowship with local YWCA member associations, national associations and the World YWCA.

About World YWCA

The World YWCA  is a global network of women leading social and economic change in 125 countries worldwide.  It advocates for peace, justice, health, human dignity, freedom and care of the environment, and has been at the forefront of raising the status of women since it was founded in 1855.

The World YWCA develops women’s leadership to find local solutions to the global inequalities women face.  Each year, it reaches more than 25 million women and girls through work in 22,000 communities.  This grassroots development experience shapes the organisation’s global advocacy agenda.  YWCA work is inspired by Christian principles and a commitment to women’s full and equal participation in society.  It is a volunteer membership movement, inclusive of women from many faiths, backgrounds and cultures.
