Outward Bound Scholarships

OutwardBoundlogo

Annually there are four national Outward Bound Scholarships of $1,500 for young women to attend an Outward Bound course.

These four annual scholarships are available to young women 30 and under who, because of economic hardship, would not otherwise be able to attend.  Funding is provided by the Sir Roy McKenzie Trust.

YWCA associations in Aotearoa New Zealand are able to support applications for this subsidy.  Our YWCA over the years has assisted with successful applications from women in the Wellington region.

Application rounds close 31 May, 31 August and 31 October annually.

There are certain commitment requirements that need to be met in order to be eligible for the scholarships, so be sure to discuss these with us.

The YWCA of Greater Wellington and Hutt prefers their applicants to:

  • become a member of our YWCA;
  • attend the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) usually held in April or May;
  • attend and either contribute/volunteer for at least two YWCA sessions within 12 months of attending their Outward Bound course;
  • submit with their final report to the YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand;
  • provide a photograph which can be used in our annual report for that year and on our and website;
  • provide a short written piece suitable to accompany the photo for our annual report.

Application process

  1. Young women fill out the YWCA Outward Bound Subsidy Application form.  The completed form, their CV and any other references along with their acceptance letter from Outward Bound are sent to the YWCA of Greater Wellington.
  2. The YWCA of Greater Wellington writes a letter of support to the National YWCA, endorsing the application.  We will invite you for an informal discussion before we decide to write this letter.
  3. YWCA Aotearoa New Zealand Board make their decisions on who to support, after each application round.
  4. Successful applicants are contacted by letter from the YWCA Aotearoa New Zealand office.  The YWCA of Greater Wellington is also notified if applications are successful.
  5. Successful applicants are to write a report for the YWCA Aotearoa New Zealand and The Sir Roy McKenzie Trust.  They are required to contribute one year of volunteer work to the YWCA of Greater Wellington, if their application is endorsed.
